Saving the Hilsa Fish - the story of Bangladesh

International Institute for Environment and Development

Saving the Hilsa Fish - the story of Bangladesh In Bangladesh 3 million people depend on fishing. Most of them have no other source of income and are living on the brink of poverty. Fishing is the only activity they can perform to make a living.

Meanwhile because of a massive overfishing Hilsa fish, locally known as "the king of all fish", is under a threat of extinction.

The government of Bangladesh put in place a programme to preserve the fish, while taking into account needs of the poorest fishers by creating compensation system during the fish protection periods.
